First Impressions: Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 (3DS)

If you’re coming to this title with a familiarity with Azure Striker Gunvolt, we’re going to say right off the bat that you’ll likely enjoy this sequel. Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 has all the excitement and fun of the first game, with the added fresh aspect of being able to play as both Gunvolt and Copen—a character with a totally different play style and approach to combat.

The first thing you’ll notice is that Copen’s playstyle is more aggressive, more in-your-fact, as opposed to the ranged attacks of Gunvolt. Copen dashes into an enemy and then fires away, then dash out of combat, then dash back, then… okay, so maybe Copen had a few too many of those Monster Energy drinks that are ubiquitous at PAX West (PAX veterans will know what we’re talking about… random drinks handed to you from street hawking “promo reps”, anyone?).

The demo showcased plenty of action and enemies, including Desna and her deadly hair whip! Which is sometimes a drill. And other times is really just out to kill you as fast as possible. Anyway, the gameplay is definitely fast paced and challenging, with critical blows coming out of seemingly nowhere to take you down, but players who are quick to use special abilities and make strategic use of their resources will enjoy the challenge of figuring out the best way to defeat each enemy as they arise.

Azure Striker Gunvolt 2 will reach the 3DS later this month, so there’s not long to wait for the full version!

Faith likes games and books and cake and writing and Lara Croft, not necessarily in that order. She also thinks a Skylanders cartoon show is a really, REALLY good idea...
