Back in February, developer Brownie Brown—of Fantasy Life fame—restructured and underwent a name change. This Nintendo subsidiary has kept things quiet while the changes took place and everyone got settled, but as of today, the company’s new website is open for business.

And the new name? 1-UP Studio.

There’s a welcome message on the website (www.1-up-studio.jp) , which roughly translates to read:

“On February 1st 2013, (formerly) Brownie Brown changed its name to 1-UP Studio Incorporated. Our office moved from Kichijoji to Iidabashi so that we can turn over a new leaf in a new environment. We would like to work hard together to develop software products that will satisfy our customers.”

1-UP Studio is fully owned by Nintendo, with a current staff list of 18 people. It’s fewer than Brownie Brown’s 32, but we’re happy to see the developer continue onward and look forward to bringing us new, exciting games in the future.

A report coming out of Japan from the Japan Times is giving us a little glimpse into what Nintendo may have planned for the future. While this information hasn’t been confirmed (and unfortunately, we don’t speak Japanese), this isn’t News of the World or anything. No Batboy here!

According to the paper, Nintendo is offering high-level conversion software to app developers “so they can produce smartphone games that can be played on Wii U.” And while that may sound a little surprising, it shouldn’t be—considering the lack of desirable games on the Wii U thus far (and the recent slew of cancellations and delays), it makes sense that Nintendo would look outside the box for any other possible way to get their system back on people’s radar.

Hopefully, the addition of some popular game app titles will give non-Wii U owners a reason to head out and invest in a console.

We’re seeing a crazy amount of discounts in the 3DS eShop these days, as Nintendo chops the prices of some of its well-known titles for download.

And now we have Code of Princess, which has been knocked from $39.99 down to an enticing price of $29.99.

If you haven’t played Code of Princess, it’s a game that’s seen high praise from players as it combines classic brawling with some of the best RPG elements—without getting over-complicated and keeping the fun element super high.

Often cited as one of the best games on the 3DS these days, this is a great opportunity to pick up this title at a discounted price if you haven’t already given a shot.

We’re not sure how long this discount will be available, so if you were planning on trying this title in the future, now’s the time!

You’d think that creators of memes would be thrilled to see their work get a little nod inside a videogame… after all, memes tend to have less than Warhol’s “15 minutes of fame” these days, seeming to come and go faster than you can say “dogfort.”

However, the creators of the Nyan Cat and Keyboard Cat memes would disagree. Strongly. And with teeth.

They’ve gone ahead and slapped 5th Cell and Warner Bros., developer and publisher of Scribblenauts games, with lawsuits that cite copyright and trademark infringement.

These “Easter egg” meme references have been inside the Scribblenauts games since 2009, when the first game released for the DS. The tradition has continued through Super Scribblenauts as well as Scribblenauts Remix for iOS and Scribblenauts Unlimited (Wii U, 3DS).

Nyan Cat creator Christopher Torres and Keyboard Cat guy Charles Schmidt have filed a complaint with the U.S. District Court in the Central District of California, alleging that the likenesses of their famed memes were used by 5th Cell and Warner Bros. without express permission:

“[F]or the past three years, WB, along with game developer 5th, have knowingly and intentionally infringed plaintiffs’ copyrights and trademarks by using “Nyan Cat” and Fatso’s image in WB’s top selling ‘Scribblenauts’ games,Including, most recently, ‘Scribblenauts Unlimited’, which WB released in 2011.”

However, the release year for Scribblenauts in the quotation above is incorrect, though it’s correct elsewhere in the filed complaint—and here’s where things get tricky. Neither meme was trademarked until 2010, which was a year after the release of the first Scribblenauts game. That… could end up being problematic for the complainants.

As part of the ongoing efforts to increase awareness about the Wii U—and move more consoles off the shelves—Nintendo has send a direct marketing message to Wii U owners, emphasizing that the new console is just that: a new console, not just another Wii with a tablet. Here’s what it said:

“It’s time to discover Wii U.

Wii U is the all-new home console from Nintendo. It’s not just an upgrade – it’s an entirely new system that will change the way you and your family experience games and entertainment.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Nintendo emphasizing that there’s a real difference between the systems—at this year’s PAX East, a promo flyer made the rounds called “Why Wii U?”

And in the most recent Financial Results Briefing for the company, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata stated that many people still seem to think the Wii U’s GamePad is a “peripheral” for the Wii, and that the company hasn’t “tried hard enough” to help people understand the system is, in fact, a brand new device:

“Some have the misunderstanding that Wii U is just Wii with a pad for games, and others even consider Wii U GamePad as a peripheral device connectable to the Wii. We feel deeply responsible for not having tried had enough to have consumers understand the product.”

He went on to promise that Nintendo will continue its efforts to help people understand the system and the value of the product, while continuing to add games to its library of available software.

As if you didn’t have enough games to play already…!

Seems Nintendo has caught a bit of spring fever, and has decided to go on a discounting whirlwind all across the 3DS eShop! These games listed below have been discounted until May 9th in North America:

3D Classics: Kirby’s Adventure — $4.99

Dillon’s Rolling Western — $6.99

Fluidity: Spin Cycle — $7.99

Pushmo — $4.99

Tokyo Crash Mobs — $4.99

Add those to the recent discounts to Guild 01 games, ATV Wild Ride 3D, and several Shin’en games, you’ll have no shortage of games to play! (Unless, of course, you bought them all at full price awhile ago… oops?)

There’s just been one hit after another when it comes to this game… and no doubt SEGA hoped they’d heard the end of it when they cancelled the Wii U version of Aliens: Colonial Marines not too long ago. If you recall (and who doesn’t?!), the game released on other platforms to scathing reviews and many irate gamers over what appeared to be one of the biggest disappointments in gaming history in quite some time.

And after the cancellation, it looked like the furor would finally die down, but apparently not. SEGA and Gearbox have been hit with a class action lawsuit in the United States that’s based around claims that the early demo footage for Aliens: Colonial Marines bore zero resemblance to the final product… and therefore mislead consumers who purchased the game.

SEGA Europe already dealt with this potential backlash by sticking a disclaimer on their trailers that states the video footage shown isn’t representative of the final product, but this American lawsuit is the real deal. Law firm Edelson LLC has filed it on behalf of plaintiff Damion Perrine, who has decided he’d like to seek compensation for all Aliens fans who purchased the game based on the misleading footage they were shown in demo reels.

So far? No comment from SEGA, but we’ll keep you apprised on this developing story!

As more and more players turn to downloadable versions of retail releases, there’s one thing they’re realizing—they need more space on their systems! Well, if you’re one of those folks, and you’re planning to download Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D from the eShop when it releases next month, you might want to head out and grab an SD card now.

This 3DS-fitted version of the popular Wii game comes to 17,693 blocks of space on the console, bringing it up to one of the largest downloads we’ve seen in the eShop (ie. Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is only 14,284 blocks). That’s likely bringing Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D to over 2GB.

Now, if you’re on the 3DS XL, you may be okay—your system comes with 4GB of space already, so provided you don’t have too many other downloads, you might have room. 3DS players only have a 2GB card included in their system, so they’ll need to head out to the store for a bigger card. Then again, if you buy most of your games through download, you may already have a larger card (or be thinking about buying one).

Only a couple more weeks to wait for this one—we’ll see it release on May 24th.
