In my look at the second phase of the 3DS launch, I praised the free version of Excitebike we got as the first title released in the ‘3D Classics’ lineup, where Nintendo takes games from the back catalog and remixes them in 3D. I talked about all of the awesome games that could benefit from 3D that the 3DS could surely handle, given the power it has.
So, after we got Excitebike, and Japan got Xevious, what comes next from the great minds at Nintendo? A 3D remix of ‘Urban Champion’. If you don’t know the game, don’t feel bad about it. In fact I might even say you’re better off, and don’t you worry. As far as we know, it’s only coming out in Japan. Maybe to the Japanese, 600 yen for Urban Champion is a good deal, though I have more respect for them than that.
It’s a beat-em-up style game from 1984 (1986 outside Japan) where you, the man with the magnificent blue hair, must defeat the evil green haired hordes in mano-a-mano unarmed combat. If you want to play it RIGHT NOW, go buy it on the Wii Virtual Console. Or don’t.
The remixed version does have local wireless play and a neat sort of half-isometric projection 3D, of the kind we will probably see used in more 3D ‘Classics’. Of course that’ll only happen if Nintendo hasn’t scraped the barrel so hard the bottoms come out of it.
