Nintendo Tries Direct Marketing to Wii Owners

As part of the ongoing efforts to increase awareness about the Wii U—and move more consoles off the shelves—Nintendo has send a direct marketing message to Wii U owners, emphasizing that the new console is just that: a new console, not just another Wii with a tablet. Here’s what it said:

“It’s time to discover Wii U.

Wii U is the all-new home console from Nintendo. It’s not just an upgrade – it’s an entirely new system that will change the way you and your family experience games and entertainment.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Nintendo emphasizing that there’s a real difference between the systems—at this year’s PAX East, a promo flyer made the rounds called “Why Wii U?”

And in the most recent Financial Results Briefing for the company, Nintendo President Satoru Iwata stated that many people still seem to think the Wii U’s GamePad is a “peripheral” for the Wii, and that the company hasn’t “tried hard enough” to help people understand the system is, in fact, a brand new device:

“Some have the misunderstanding that Wii U is just Wii with a pad for games, and others even consider Wii U GamePad as a peripheral device connectable to the Wii. We feel deeply responsible for not having tried had enough to have consumers understand the product.”

He went on to promise that Nintendo will continue its efforts to help people understand the system and the value of the product, while continuing to add games to its library of available software.
