Ah, Luigi… after waiting decades for your moment in the spotlight, and finally finding yourself at the forefront of our minds for what has seemed like a few short months… your time has come to an end. Er, so to speak.
Shigeru Miyamoto has shaken us back to reality by confirming that the Year of Luigi ends on March 18th. While he has only had twelve months in which to cast a shadow over that other brother, he starred in several games on his own—Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, New Super Luigi U, and Dr. Luigi—and was a formidable character in his own right in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team and Super Mario 3D World.
But, everyone’s 15 minutes are up eventually, as Miyamoto has reminded us in his post on Miiverse:
Almost a year has passed since I announced the Year of Luigi, marking the 30th anniversary of Luigi’s debut. Thanks to everyone’s kind support, we were able to release many Luigi games over the course of the year. I hope everyone continues to cheer for the green brother!
However, all good things must come to an end, and the Year of Luigi will conclude on March 18.
From this date on, the Year of Luigi Community and its Developers’ Room will sadly no longer accept new posts or comments. (The exact date and time is listed in each community’s description.) That means there’s one more month to go. I hope everyone continues to share their thoughts on Luigi with people from around the world!
Oh, Luigi… we’ll only remember you in our memories, at this rate, because your Miiverse communities are disappearing?! Harsh. But, progress is progress, and I suppose Nintendo wants to make way for someone else’s moment in the spotlight.
