Will the Wii U Version of Super Smash Bros. Use NFC Technology?

At this year’s E3, we’re expecting Nintendo to show off more details about the recent announcement regarding the Nintendo Figurine Platform, but Nintendo of France’s managing director Stephan Bole has jumped the gun, so to speak.

Here’s what Bole said to the French website Le Figaro about the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros.:

“E3 is also an opportunity to show the use of NFC technology in Nintendo consoles. The NFC will be used in the Wii U version of Super Smash Bros.”

All righty, then. The only strange part about this is that it seems like a major announcement, but there’s been nothing official from Nintendo HQ, so to speak. The WIi U version of Super Smash Bros. is coming at the end of the year, with the 3DS version releasing during the summer, so one might expect that an announcement of this size would come directly from Nintendo’s head bosses.

After all, the idea of purchasing figurines for a Nintendo game—while exciting for some—may be a turn-off for other players, so how it will be implemented will likely make all the difference.

We’ll keep you updated as this story develops.

Dave will tell you that he likes to play video games, this is in fact a lie. What he really likes to do is buy games, and leaving them sitting unopened on his shelf. He is a monster.
