E3 2014: Hands-On with Amiibo

One of the really exciting things about E3 this year was knowing that Nintendo would be bringing their new figurines to the show, finally showing off what they look like and how they work. The figures, known as “amiibo,” take inspiration from the figures we’ve come to know and recognize from the Skylanders and Disney Infinity games.

Amiibo also uses NFC technology, which in this case is readable by the Wii U GamePad, and a 3DS optional accessory that will be released either later this year or next year. However, unlike the other games, Nintendo has already confirmed that amiibo will be compatible with multiple games—currently, Smash Bros. Wii U, Mario Party 10, and Mario Kart 8 are already on the board to support amiibo figures.

That places the concept at a much higher value for consumers, since they don’t need new figures for different games. Will it fly? We’ll have to wait and find out.

Faith likes games and books and cake and writing and Lara Croft, not necessarily in that order. She also thinks a Skylanders cartoon show is a really, REALLY good idea...
