If last year was the Year of Luigi, does that mean it’s time for another company to step in and make this the “Year of” someone else? It seems like SEGA is trying very hard to make 2014 the Year of Sonic, with the announcements and launch of a new series of Sonic products. We’re seeing the Sonic Boom universe unleashed with games Rise of Lyric (Wii U) and Shattered Crystal (3DS), alongside a computer animated series and a plethora of related toy products.
Just before the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con, Archie Comics has announced one more notch in the Sonic belt for this year—a comic book series based on the Sonic Boom universe.
Writer Ian Flynn will be spearheading this project, with art created by Evan Stanley. The first issue will have four variant covers. Flynn spoke to IGN about the project, and said this about what we can look forward to seeing:
“Sonic is still pretty much what you’d expect – quick-witted, playful, and snarky. Tails is likewise very much the same as he’s been in the current games – an equal partner in Sonic’s adventures. Knuckles has gotten a bit goofier, but his friendly rivalry with Sonic remains. Amy has traded in her total fixation on Sonic for being the sensible one of the group… mostly.
…I’m really excited to be writing the series since it’s a very different Sonic than our other books, Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Universe. It’s a more casual read with a focus on comedy and adventure than an on-going action-adventure drama. I think anyone will be able to grab any issue and enjoy themselves.”
Sonic fans, is this something you’re looking forward to? (Also notable—Archie comics are still a thing. Who knew?)
