PAX Prime: First Impressions—Super Smash Bros. (3DS / for Wii U)

At PAX Prime, Nintendo knew exactly what its fans wanted. Smash Bros and a lot of Smash Bros. And then some more Smash Bros.! Players who came to the booth and tried the demo were handed a ticket for a Smash Bros. branded sweat towel, which was a fun way to promote the game and give folks a useful item to take home and remind them about the game. Not that anyone seemed to need much reminding, as the booth around the demo stations was continually jam-packed with hopeful PAXers waiting to play the game.

The demo rounds were a couple of two-minute “have-at-its”, and you were able to choose from some old and new faces on both consoles. Truth be told, it seemed like much of the demo delay time stemmed from players agonizing over who to play to try the demo with.

The controls were what you’ve come to expect from Smash Bros., and the visuals were smooth and stunning. The pace of the matches was as frantic as you’ve come to expect, and while a two-minute demo isn’t really enough time to get familiar with all the new characters, moves, or combos, it was fun enough to confirm that these versions of Super Smash Bros. will be a success for fans and newcomers alike.

It was also nice to see that the Nintendo booth had plenty of staff members around the Smash Bros. demo stations to answer questions and provide information about both of the games. If the excitement from the players after the demo was any indication, Nintendo has another smash hit (see what I did there?) on their hands!
