PAX Prime: First Impressions—SteamWorld Heist (3DS)

We’ve spend quite a bit of news space updating our readers on SteamWorld Dig and the upcoming SteamWorld Heist, so it was nice to see that the game would be available for a little demo in the Nindies Lounge at the Sheraton this year.

Playing SteamWorld Heist will be different from the first game from Image & Form, and they’ve stated that while it’s not necessarily a sequel, it’s another game in the SteamWorld franchise. In this game, players control scavengers who, uh, scavenge. You’re searching for items, goods, scrap, whatever you can find. And you’re kind of like…robots. Cowboy robots? Sure. Let’s go with that.

Anyway, it’s a turn-based strategy title in 2D, and it’ll require more concentrated and careful effort than SteamWorld Dig. Strategy is key when you’re making your way through the level environments, and using cover to your advantage is a critical tactic.

There wasn’t a whole lot more to the demo than this, but the aesthetics are great and fans of the first game should find a lot to enjoy here. Strategy game fans with a taste for steampunk-esque titles should also give this one a shot.

Faith likes games and books and cake and writing and Lara Croft, not necessarily in that order. She also thinks a Skylanders cartoon show is a really, REALLY good idea...
