Whether he was supposed to spill the beans or not—and he’s only slightly tipped the can, we’d say—GameStop’s COO Tony Bartel has revealed that Nintendo’s newest console, the secretive and mysterious project “NX”, will be announced and launched sometime this year.
It was at a GameStop event that Bartel mentioned “console launches” are coming this year:
“Although we have not modelled extensive growth for new innovation in this presentation, we are very pleased to see the introduction of technology like virtual reality and rumoured new console launches. Some of which seem imminent.”
And though he didn’t say which consoles he was talking about, naturally, he stated:
“As usual, we know more than we can share.”
Which is all to say that while it may not be the NX he’s speaking about—we do know that there are rumors about Sony following up the PS4 with an upgraded version, and Microsoft keeps putting its foot down on next gen rumors for its own products—there really isn’t anything much else to speculate on.
It’s not unusual that GameStop would have information about upcoming products—as a retailer, they need this kind of information to plan with—so all we can say at this point is, maybe it’d be a good idea to start saving your pennies, just in case…
