It’s already been announced that we’re getting two new Sonic the Hedgehog games, presumably arriving sometime in 2017. We know that the mysteriously named Project Sonic 2017 will arrive on Nintendo’s just-as-mysterious NX console plus additional platforms, while Sonic Mania—a game that revisits the traditional nature of the blue hedgehog’s gaming experiences—won’t be heading to a Nintendo system at all.
It seems a little bizarre, especially considering how perfectly suited the 3DS is at giving players an awesome 2D gaming experience with platformers. And we’re not the only ones scratching our heads—industry leaders who love Sonic are feeling the same confusion…so much so that Renegade Kid’s Jools Watsham reached out to SEGA to offer up his company’s services for developing a 3DS port.
He posted this offer via a Tweet, and then followed up on it a little while later to let us all know that Sega had, so far, remained silent on the matter.
Update on my Sonic Mania 3DS offer: Heard nothing from @SEGA. No worries. Just hope they’re working on 3DS version. https://t.co/XRzXAfR9SH

Either way, we’re hoping that putting attention on the 3DS, combined with the desire to see Sonic Mania on this platform coming from industry pros, will make Sega take a second look at their current plans to skip Nintendo consoles for this title.
