Nintendo’s Focus Still on Switch, Despite New 3DS Offerings

Nintendo fans have been rather vocal for the past year and a half regarding their desire for Nintendo to get all hands on deck when it comes to developing games for the Switch, instead of funneling resources toward 3DS content, both new and rereleases. However, NoA president & COO Reggie Fils-Aime spoke to Kotaku last week to reassure fans that the Switch is indeed Nintendo’s priority… however, there are younger players new to gaming for whom the 3DS is the perfect introductory point:

Our development focus is on Nintendo Switch… You look at the plethora of content we’ve launched; the plethora of content we’ve announced. That is clearly where our development focus is.

There are a lot of five, six, seven-year olds who have an opportunity to have their first gaming device and to have a fantastic gaming experience. And that’s what our dedicated handheld business is for, both the 2DS and the 3DS… the next generation of gamers need to start somewhere.”

In the interview, Reggie goes on to make specific mention of Nintendo’s prerogative to bring the company’s newest game experiences to the Switch first, before introducing it to the 3DS—such as with next year’s planned release of Luigi’s Mansion.
