The co-founder and CEO of Tesla, Inc—Elon Musk—is known for his outside-the-box approach to technology and development, as well as his occasionally bizarre ideas that go so far outside of the box they’re practically in orbit (though that’s not out of the realm of reality for Musk, considering his SpaceX program).
As IGN reported yesterday, Musk recently tried to make Mario Kart x Tesla happen, by approaching Nintendo with the idea to create an in-car version of Mario Kart. He revealed this via his Twitter account, when a Twitter user suggested “a version of Mario Kart where you can play against random people who are also charging their car.”
Musk responded with: “We tried. Nintendo won’t license it to us.”
Why Nintendo said no hasn’t been revealed, but you may recall that Mercedes and Mario Kart have previously had a partnership via in-game content. Whether that relationship still exists or there’s another reason is unknown, but as bizarre as it seems, it’s not actually that strange for Musk to have pursued this line of thinking. In October of this year, several classic Atari games—Centipede and Missile Command, to name a few—became playable in Tesla cars.
If you want to play Mario Kart in your Tesla, well… looks like you’ll have to bring along your Switch or 3DS like the rest of us, or wait until Mario Kart Tour arrives on mobile next year.
