The Lord of the Rings: Gollum has been confirmed by Daedalic Entertainment to be headed to the Switch “late” 2021. During the Future Games Show, game designers from the company spoke to IGN about this action-adventure title and what we can look forward to when playing as Gollum.
Lead game designer Martin Wilkes likened it to a Prince of Persia title, in the sense of being mostly non-combat but stealth-based when it comes to eliminating an enemy. Since Gollum’s strengths “lie in cunning not combat” there will be risks associated with every action that players will need to carefully consider.
And even more intriguing is that you’re not necessarily always playing as Gollum, so to speak. Sometimes you’ll control Smeagol, in the sense that it’s the same physical form but may be one ‘dominant’ persona over the other—and according to lead narrative designer Tilman Schanen, “that can influence animations, soundscapes, certain gameplay situation, and in-game dialogue.”
The team is aiming to remain as true as possible to the source material, namely the books by J.R.R. Tolkien and not the Peter Jackson films.
The storyline for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum will begin when Gollum is in Mordor, searching for Bilbo Baggins and the ring.
