SqEnix Hit By Quarterly Loss

Poor little Square Enix… the Japanese publisher has released its financial statement for the first quarter of 2012, and it turns out that the company saw a net loss of 2,077 million yen. That’s a lot of yen.

How did this happen? Turns out that poor console sales are to blame for the loss, because even though the Nintendo 3DS title Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry’s Wonderland 3D sold like sushi in Japan, it’s been the only real commercial success for the company this year. That said, it wasn’t all bad for Square Enix… they’ve had a few non-console projects, such as mobile / browser based games, that have held their own this year.

Still it’s likely that the execs are squirming in their seats a little bit and doing their best to figure out how to bump revenues in the second half of the year.

Well, with several highly-anticipated games on the horizon, we’re willing to bet the next quarter shows significantly different results.

You can read the press release (don’t worry, it’s in English) concerning the financial results here
