If you were planning a big purchase from the eShop today, you’re out of luck! Nintendo’s stores will be offline today for temporary scheduled maintenance. The 3DS eShop, DSi Shop and Wii Shop Channel will be “closed” for approximately 7 hours.
Why are they offline? There are a variety of possible reasons, one of which might be the preparation of these shops for the Nintendo ID accounts that are coming down the line in the very near future. With this, you’ll be able to tie all purchases together under a single ID tag, and share the purchases between systems.
Or… it could just be a move to set things up for the Wii U. Or some routine maintenance. Who knows! And we may or may not find out on Wednesday, so just stay patient and play something you already have for a day.
