Disney Infinity is Coming to Clean Out Your Wallet – This Summer!

It was late last year when scant details emerged about a new project from Disney called Disney Infinity, a game title that finally takes advantage of the success of the Skylanders model by using real figurines and an external portal as part of the game experience. Disney plans to take this model one step further, and yesterday, additional details were revealed about this upcoming money-maker.

Previously, we’d learned that there will be two distinct areas in the game, the “Play Set” area (with specific challenges and puzzles that will unlock characters, items, and vehicles) and the “Toy Box” (where you can use those unlocked items). The Toy Box area is more or less a customizable play area, where players will be able to develop their own environments, use their characters to go nuts, and then share the insanity with friends online or off.

And of course, Disney’s going to make this hard on us—they don’t only plan to use the portal concept for figurines, but for other in-game items and power-ups as well. Their aim for Disney Infinity seems to be that it’ll be come a platform from which to continually expand for a number of years, through DLC and of course, more toys to buy.

The game is heading just about everywhere—including the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS—and even mobile devices will get a piece of the action. And we’re going to see it as early as this summer, so start saving your pennies now!

Check out the trailer below, along with a brief excerpt from an official fact sheet on the range of collectibles that’ll be available for use with the game’s “Infinity Base”:

“Disney Infinity will initially introduce a line of 40 collectible interactive figures – characters, “Play Set” pieces and power discs – that allow players to expand and customize their play experiences. Over time, Disney Infinity will release additional characters and “Play Sets” and this platform will constantly evolve.

  • 17 interactive character figures allow players to experience a variety of their favourite characters in each ”Play Set” and in “Toy Box” play
  • 3 “Play Set” pieces that add new Disney and Disney•Pixar “Play Set” locations
  • 20 power discs enhance environments, add gadgets and more”

Dave will tell you that he likes to play video games, this is in fact a lie. What he really likes to do is buy games, and leaving them sitting unopened on his shelf. He is a monster.
