Help Luigi Clean Up with Local Multiplayer… Or Not

If you’ve played the demo for Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon at any time over the past 6 months or so, you undoubtedly recall that the demo levels were single-player. Rumors of multiplayer did arrive back in November 2011, but that was quickly squashed with Nintendo waving their arms and telling us it was a huge mistake.

That’s all well and good, but now that we have the official website for the game, it says this:

“With so many new places to explore, all new ways to capture ghosts, and a brand new local multiplayer mode, Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon is another star turn for Mario’s heroic brother—and it’s only on Nintendo 3DS.”

But if you look on the side bar where there’s information listed about the game… it says “No. of Players: 1 player.” Well, great. So is there, or isn’t there? As with most new Nintendo games, there’ll likely be a StreetPass feature, but that doesn’t count as multiplayer (sorry, but I don’t see getting a puzzle piece or trading an item as “multiplayer”). So what does that mean? Will we see a second Luigi, or a ghost to antagonize player one, or a Mii appear in the game to help Luigi clear rooms?

Speculation is already heating up online as to whether this is a real feature or just a listing error. Presumably, we’ll know either way fairly soon.
