One of the news items that made Skylanders fans groan and clutch their wallets—or rather, their parents clutched their wallets—was the announcement of a new Portal of Power for the upcoming Skylanders release later this year. With Skylanders Giants, players who already had the Portal from the first game were able to escape purchasing a second portal, bringing the cost of Giants down in a significant way.
But this new game requires a new Portal, so no one’s going to escape it this time. Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision, spoke to Family Gamer about the portal and offered additional details about Skylanders Swap Force.
The Portal of Power, like the previous games, will be sold in the Swap Force Starter Pack, and unlike the previous games where the same one could be reused, this new Portal is required for additional functionality. The mix-and-match nature of the new game means the old Portal isn’t able to do what the new game needs it to—thus, parting with a little extra cash to play this instalment. However, the very good news is that the old Skylanders figures will work just fine on the new Portal. *phew*
Currently, Skylanders Swap Force doesn’t have a price or a release date, but it has been announced for the Wii, Wii U and 3DS, with plans to release late this year.
