Why No Circle Pad in Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon?

There’s been no shortage of praise about Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon these days, however there’s one aspect of the game that keeps coming up time and time again as a point of critique… why can’t we use a second analogue stick? How come Nintendo didn’t give the game support for Circle Pad Pro?

In an interview with game director Bryce Holliday on IGN, the omission was explained like this:

“We always wanted it to work with a single circle pad. When we moved to a second analog stick, because we’d actually changed that gameplay mechanic paradigm to the tug-of-war, it just wouldn’t work. There was nothing to do with the second stick. By changing, at the beginning of the project, the high-level strategy around the ghost fishing, we found that when we did experiment with the Circle Pad Pro, it didn’t add anything.”

Well, that’s one way to look at it, though the players seem to beg to differ. Thoughts?
