Nintendo has been trying its darndest to get us all to stop buying hard copies of their games and download titles instead—in Europe, there’s been a 30% discount on The Wonderful 101 when players purchase Pikmin 3 on the eShop, and now Nintendo of America has thrown down the gauntlet with its own offer.
American and Canadian Wii U owners are encouraged to digitally download the games they want instead of using those old-fashioned disc thingies, and Nintendo of America hopes they’re able to convince you with… free money. If you add between $50 and $99.99 to your Wii U eShop account before July 28th, you’ll be emailed a Wii U eShop code for $5 credit in the store. The credit will conveniently arrive on August 2nd, just before Pikmin 3 is released. If you’re feeling really flush and add $100 or more, you’ll receive a $10 credit.
In order to take advantage of the offer, you’ll need a valid email address that’s tied into your Nintendo Network account. The funds need to be added to the eShop account between July 22nd and 28th, and the credit is only good in the Wii U eShop. If you were planning to purchase several upcoming retail titles anyway, this may be the perfect offer for you—the amount needed for credit is about the cost of two games.
For players with the 32GB Wii U model, part of the Nintendo Network Premium promotion is a $5 voucher for the eShop for every $60 or so spent—so if that’s you, take advantage while you can!
