Two Tribes, the development studio best known for creating the Toki Tori games, Toki Tori and Toki Tori 2, has entered bankruptcy. The studio’s financial woes are old news for them, which they have explained in an official blog post, explaining that things really got ugly in October 2013.
Now, owners Martijn Reuvers and Collin van Ginkel are forming a new, smaller company, which will be a sub-company of the unaffected Two Tribes Publishing B.V. (which was separate from Two Tribes the development studio).
Notably, Two Tribes games will remain for sale and are unaffected by the announcement—their games available on 3DS and Wii U are part of Two Tribes Publishing B.V., and thus remain for sale. However, it seems that a large percentage of the Two Tribes development team has left the company, and this new, smaller company will focus on quick turnaround projects that don’t require a custom-built engine. *cough*Toki Tori 2+*cough*
“We’ve got a ton of hindsight to work with and we’re going to be applying the lessons we learned to the new Top Tribes. Behind the scenes things will change quite a bit … we’ll be working with a much smaller team on our next game, a 2D side-scrolling shooter, which will be re-using the existing Toki Tori 2+ engine.
Our focus will be on the design of our games, which we plan on making more of in less time than before.”
Good luck to the new company—it sounds like we’ll be seeing more of them very soon.
