PAX East 2014: First Impressions – Blast ‘Em Bunnies (3DS/Wii U)

Animal lovers, look away now. No, further than that. In fact, just close this page now and come back another time.

Look, Blast ‘Em Bunnies is a simple enough concept. It’s a release coming from Nnooo in the near future, and you spend your time in a first-person shooter style setup, shooting fruits and vegetables at bunny rabbits. Normally, this would be a good thing—hey, bunnies like their veggies!—but in this case, you’re sort of… uh… killing the bunnies with food?!

To be fair, the bunnies are trying to kill you first. So, you’re blasting the bunnies. Hence the name.

Movement is easy, and consoles with motion control can use that to control the rifle, if wanted. The main problem we had with the game was… well, it wasn’t very good. Maybe that’s because we were playing a demo, but there wasn’t anything particularly special about the game.

At one point, a bunny popped up holding a baby bunny by the ears—with a knife at its throat. According to one of the developers (who stood next to me as I played), if you don’t shoot the larger bunny in time, it slits the throat of the baby bunny. In a cartoonish way (of course), but… uh, what?!

One of the bosses in the game was a giant rabbit that, once you knock him over, has a giant pinkish blob emerge from its belly that you shoot at. When I asked what that was supposed to be, I was told it’s his “belly button.” First, bunnies don’t have belly buttons. Second, the last I checked, belly buttons don’t pop out of stomachs like the creature from Alien. It all resulted in a weird play experience that actually left a bad taste in my mouth.

Plus, I just didn’t have fun.

If you’re wanting to check this one out on your own, it should be out for around $4.99 on the eShop when it releases.
