Pixels Coming to the Big Screen

Depending on where you were in 2010, you may or may not remember the short film Pixels by Patrick Jean. The film featured famous retro game characters invading New York City… and now the short is going long, being turned into a full-length movie directed by Chris Columbus (Home Alone, Harry Potter).

Casting is happening right now, and currently the film stars Adam Sandler, Peter Dinklage (of Game of Thrones fame), Kevin James, Michelle Monaghan, Brian Cox, and Josh Gad (yes, the guy who voiced Olaf in Frozen).

The plot for this full film centers around aliens mistaking video game footage for an act of aggression… and the aliens send similar characters to battle it out on earth. Naturally, a gaggle of expert gamers is called upon to defend earth from the threat. But even more impressive is the amount of licensing deals Sony Pictures has managed to ink to use various video game properties, including:

  • Asteroids
  • Breakout
  • Centipede
  • Donkey Kong
  • Galaga
  • Pac-Man
  • Missile Command
  • Q*Bert

…and more! Here’s what Chris Columbus had to say about the process of getting all these deals in place:

“There would be no way to make the movie without these legendary characters – they are as important to the film as the roles that Adam, Kevin, Michelle, Peter, Josh, and Brian are playing. It was a real thrill to see everything come together exactly as we envisioned it, and we’re grateful to have all of these fantastic companies on board.”

There’s no footage for the project yet, but if you’ve never watched the original short film, now’s your chance! Then think about what it would be like with millions of Hollywood dollars behind it. It’s happening!

Dave will tell you that he likes to play video games, this is in fact a lie. What he really likes to do is buy games, and leaving them sitting unopened on his shelf. He is a monster.
