PAX South: Panels of Interest (Friday)

While there are no Nintendo-specific panels happening today at PAX South, we’ve perused the program listings and selected several panels to highlight that we think might be of interest to Nintendo Fire readers. We base this purely on our opinions, so you may disagree and that’s okay! We’ve chosen to highlight them due to content, the list of panelists, or even just a general thematic tie.

Of course, don’t take our word for it! Flip through the program or use the PAX guidebook app to find things of interest to you—but maybe one of these suggestions will highlight something you didn’t notice before.

  • Armadillo Theatre: Why This Game is Great (or Terrible) Live! (12:00pm-1:00pm)
    • “Sure, your favorite game is fun, but do you know why it’s fun? Exactly why is it rewarding to see Mario collect a coin or Master Chief land a headshot? In this panel, a group of expert game analysts and journalists will analyze a title in real time, providing direct and fun insight on what features stand out as great (or terrible, as the case may be). The live commentary will show just why games work the way they do.”

  • Armadillo Theatre: Omegathon Round 1: Mario Kart: Double Dash (1:30pm-2:30pm)
    • “WELCOME TO THE OMEGATHON! The first of two rounds before “the cut,” all 20 Omeganauts will compete in the ultimate quest for blue sparks, Mario Kart: Double Dash. Introducing the PAX South exclusive time trial format, we’ll all see who can post the fastest times in grand prix mode. Don’t forget, those that place last still have a chance for redemption in Round 2, as the cumulative times for both rounds will determine the top 10!”

  • Armadillo Theatre: Six Secrets for Startup Suceess in the Indie Golden Age (3:00pm-4:00pm)
    • “We are in a golden age of indie game development. Little guys have access to tools and publishers once behind ‘Insider Only’ doors. Players look to indie devs for innovation like never before. But building a successful indie studio remains hard and uncertain work. Come hear insider stories, and network with other indie devs in an open talk with the publishers and studios behind Awesomenauts, Brawlhalla, Freedom Planet, Serious Sam and more.”

NINTENDO FIRE NOTE: Panelists include Fabrian Akker of Ronimo Game

  • Armadillo Theatre: The Ocarina Panel: How an Ancient Flute Became a Gaming Icon (9:00pm-10:00pm)
    • “The Ocarina is a ceramic instrument over 12,000 years old, yet most people believe it only exists in Hyrule. Youtuber and professional ocarinist David Erick Ramos will present various types of ocarinas and discuss their history, including how they made it into Nintendo’s “Legend of Zelda” series. Come see ocarinas from around the world, listen to David perform your favorite video game themes, and bring your own ocarina for a live tutorial.”

Dave will tell you that he likes to play video games, this is in fact a lie. What he really likes to do is buy games, and leaving them sitting unopened on his shelf. He is a monster.
