Is Reggie Teasing Us About a Standard New 3DS in North America?

When the announcement came down the line that the New Nintendo 3DS would be released only as XL in North America, there was a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth. And a lot of kids and adults with small hands who literally couldn’t transition to the New Nintendo 3DS because, well… they can’t reach all the buttons.

Many Nintendo fans have pledged to wait until we someday—maybe—see the standard arrive on these shores, but there’s been no news thus far. Well, until now? Nintendo of America Reggie Fils-Aime usually sticks to the standard info sheet that he seems to be provided by Nintendo HQ, but in an interview with Kotaku he may have opened the door to rumors regarding the smaller version hitting this region.

When asked about the New Nintendo 3DS standard size, he said:

“So we’ve got nothing to announce here. We’ve certainly taken note of all of the readers and consumers that expressed desire for the base model.

We analyzed the results in Japan and saw the lion’s share of the volume was on the XL model, and that’s with no 2DS existing in the Japanese market. And so as we thought about: ‘What’s the best line-up for us?’ We thought the new XL and 2DS would be our best line-up. Not going to make any promises but, you know, I would suggest to your readers that they stay tuned and maybe some special SKUs might show up.”

Well, Reggie, you big tease, what does it all mean?! We’re hoping this means more info is actually coming soon, and the minute it does, you know we’ll mention it here.

Dave will tell you that he likes to play video games, this is in fact a lie. What he really likes to do is buy games, and leaving them sitting unopened on his shelf. He is a monster.
