Nindies@Night / First Impressions: Jotun: Valhalla Edition (Wii U)

Do you like difficult games? No, for real. Games that are hard and will have you screaming at the TV and/or throwing your controller at the wall? Then you’re in for a real treat! (We see the rest of you, slinking away…)

Here’s the thing. Jotun: Valhalla Edition is visually stunning, with hand-drawn art that will make your jaw drop. But it’s not the kind of game that you barrel into with the expectation of immediate action, adventure, blood and gore. Yes, you’re fighting giants, but it’s more on the epic scope than the “let’s spend 10 minutes in this noisy event room trying to get a sense of this atmospheric game.” And therein lies the challenge.

Jotun originally released last September, but this version for the Wii U gave Thunder Lotus Games a chance to improve upon the criticisms they received to make the console version something truly special.

Players who love games like Shadow of the Colossus, but also are fans of a more cartoonish art style, will find themselves drawn to it. The Valhalla Edition’s updated features include a new boss rush mode, an additional difficulty setting, and remastered move sets for bosses.

While at the Nindies, we observed numerous players get frustrated and fail to defeat the boss battle that had been set up as a demo. However, once the player has a chance to master the movements and features, and get a handle on how the game works, it seems that Jotun will provide a challenging but satisfying gaming experience.

It release very soon, on September 8th for Wii U.

Dave will tell you that he likes to play video games, this is in fact a lie. What he really likes to do is buy games, and leaving them sitting unopened on his shelf. He is a monster.
