More Frequent Map Rotation in Splatoon 2

Hold onto your rollers, squids… because times are finally a’changing, and it’s definitely for the better. As huge of a hit as Splatoon was a few summers ago, there were naturally several complaints about the game (no title is immune, let’s face it), and one of the more significant issues had to do with map rotation.

In Splatoon, the maps were rotated in each mode on a four hour schedule. Players had access to only two maps in Turf Wars and two maps in Ranked Battle, and sometimes these would even overlap. It got frustrating, to say the least, especially when you seemed to always miss the rotation window for your favorite map (or constantly ended up on that blasted Moray Towers map… you know what we’re talking about).

In Splatoon 2, this will change:

“We feel that part of the gameplay is actually selecting which weapons would be best for that combination of two maps. In Splatoon 2, the maps rotate every two hours, so it’ll be a much faster cycle than the previous game.”

So says game producer Hisashi Nogami to EDGE magazine! And we’re right on board. No, it’s not a perfect change, and it’s still not as flexible as many players would certainly like, but it seems like a fair compromise.

Now, if only we could get three maps to rotate through instead of two…
