PETA was totally joking, seriously!

So when you saw Mario slip on his cute Tanooki raccoon suit in Super Mario Brothers 3, the first thing you thought to yourself was ‘Dang, I need to go skin a raccoon and wear it’s fur!”.  No?  Me neither… guess it was just PETA.  In case you missed it, for the launch of Super Mario 3D Land in which Mario wears his Tanooki suit once more, PETA decided to launch a bloody version of Mario you can play on their website in which you are a skinless raccoon chasing after a bloodied Mario wearing a carcass.  Classy, right?  Well, they were totally just joking!

In an email sent out they had this to say:

Mario fans: Relax! PETA’s game was meant to be tongue-in-cheek, a fun way to call attention to a serious issue, that raccoon dogs are skinned alive for their fur,” Shakira Croce, PETA’s media coordinator said. “We wish real-life tanukis could fly or swat enemies away with their tails and escape from those who profit from their skins. You can help them by never buying real fur.

Of course, the reason that we all love PETA is their reasoned response to things that offend them in some way.  And really, in that we’re talking about it, it worked for them, they got their message out.  In the same way that their ‘you wouldn’t eat your cat, so don’t eat fish’ promo confused people but got their message shared, so did this.

Of course, not a group to be outdone by crazy, Taiwanese media group Next Media Animation had this to add:

Faaantastic!
