Wii U’s Current Priority is Harnessing NFC

One of the world’s most beloved businessmen and inventors has chimed in publicly on his company’s plans for the Wii U console. In speaking with Polygon, Nintendo Senior Managing Director and Super Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto emphasized the importance of NFC (“Near Field Communication”) on the Wii U:

“With NFC, that’s a feature that everyone that owns a Wii U can take advantage of. So that’s what we’re putting our priorities right now. We’re hoping that in the near future we’ll be able to show you something that will take advantage of NFC on Wii U and people will be able to enjoy that.”

This is the technology used for the bestselling Skylanders games and the upcoming Disney Infinity game. Miyamoto stressed that because everyone can access NFC and it won’t require dual GamePads, that technology is taking priority. However, that doesn’t mean we won’t see dual GamePad capability in the near future:

“With regards to the two GamePads functionality, from a gaming system standpoint we are developing games that will have that capability. In the future, perhaps when we get closer to something that, an environment where everybody or a large majority of people would have two GamePads, that might be a time where we look at how we can leverage a system of that nature.”

He is, of course, talking about multiplayer aspects of the Wii U and GamePads.

There you have it, from the man himself—new tech for the system is underway!
