Best Buy Locations Announced for Nintendo World Championships Qualifiers

What Nintendo fan didn’t get a little giddy at Nintendo’s announcement that they were reviving the Nintendo World Championships for this year’s E3? It’s going to bring back 1990 (aww yeah) and doubtless will capture the imagination of Nintendo fans old and new… and who among us didn’t think for just a moment, “I’d like to try out for that!”

Well, some additional details have emerged on just how to do that, and you may not be all that thrilled about it. We’re sad to say that Nintendo has announced only eight Best Buy locations for qualifiers being held on May 30th—yes, that’s eight stores across the whole of the United States—with the event being run between 10am-7pm local time in each store.

If you do manage to get to one of these locations and compete, you’ll find yourself playing Championship mode from Ultimate NES Remix on 3DS. There are three score based challenges in this mode that are based on Dr. Mario, Super Mario Bros., and Super Mario Bros. 3.

The whole of the competition at E3 will have only 16 final competitors:

The top scorer from each of the eight regional competitions will move on to the final event in Los Angeles, which will be a multi-round competition with a variety of Nintendo games. An additional eight competitors selected by Nintendo will also compete in the Nintendo World Championships 2015. Nintendo will reveal these competitors in the near future.”

That’s all well and good, Nintendo, but why so few qualifiers? With the scope of the event—they’re pumping it for E3, after all—you’d think they’d allow a wider scale of qualifying rounds in the weeks beforehand.

Here’s the list of the stores holding qualifiers. If you’re interested, for your sake we hope you live close enough to get out to one of these:
