We’re seeing video game adaptations on the silver screen more and more frequently as of late, and it’s been reported by Deadline Hollywood that Sony Pictures sub-division Screen Gems has just acquired the rights to create a movie based on… Just Dance. Yes, Ubisoft’s popular dance-based gaming series. That’s the one.
Apparently, this was a multi-studio auction, with everyone competing for the rights to target their version of the Just Dance film to a user base of 120 million players across the globe. While it may sound laughable, selling film rights for this game series sits with Sony’s stated mandate to exploit their properties across multiple media platforms.
With this project, Ubisoft Film and Television and Olive Bridge Entertainment will develop and produce, with a search for scriptwriters ongoing. According to IGN, Screen Gems has an established history of adapting video games to film, including the Resident Evil series and upcoming Monster Hunter.
