Iwata Bows Out of Attending E3

Although E3 is just around the corner, Nintendo has surprised us with an announcement regarding their company president. Satoru Iwata will not be attending the conference this year, though all the major figures of Nintendo of America plus Shigeru Miyamoto will be there.

Iwata’s decline in attending comes at the behest of his doctor. A representative from Nintendo explains:

“He’s been instructed by his physician not to travel overseas in the immediate future, and so he will not be making the trip to Los Angeles. Please understand that it is business as usual for Mr. Iwata, and he continues his normal duties as president of Nintendo Co., Ltd. while he remains in Japan. As always, he will be actively involved in all of Nintendo’s activities at the show.”

There’s a hefty pile of events planned by Nintendo for this year’s conference, though once again they’re foregoing the live press conference option in favor of other approaches. At this point, we have to trust the information we’re given about Iwata and assume that all is well—better to be prudent and follow a doctor’s advice than push on, after all.
