Yes, it is a real thing! Mario Maker has been announced for the Wii U, and will appear on the console next year!
The game is similar to Little Big Planet, the game series on the PlayStation consoles. Mario Maker will allow players to build 2D Super Mario stages, with many customization options and plenty of classic props from the Super Mario game franchise.
You’ll also be able to switch between two visual styles when building: Classic Super Mario Bros. and the newer, modern-style of New Super Mario Bros. games. We’re also getting the impression that players will be able to share their creations with others, which could create a really amazing and active gaming community around the title.
